Progressive Lenses

AUTHOR Yishai Grossman / PUBLISHED: MAY-27-2019

If you are getting older and you are having a hard time seeing small print with your glasses, you are probably should be in the market for glasses with multi-focal lenses. This does not mean that you have to wear hideous lenses like bifocals or trifocals that feature a noticeable line in them. For most people today, progressive lenses are a much better option as they are line-free.

What are progressive lenses?

Progressive lenses look just like regular single vision glasses except they are multi-focal and don't have a line in the lens. This way you don't have to look like you are aging with a line bifocal or trifocal lens.

The focal power of progressive lenses changes gradually from point to point on the lens surface, while providing the correct lens power for seeing objects clearly at virtually any distance. Unlike bifocals, that can only see distance and the lower half for reading distance and are separated by a visible line.

Today, you can get digital progressive lenses. The difference between regular and digital is not only the clarity but also offers 40% more coverage on the lens.

What are the benefits of progressive lenses?

  • It provides clearer vision at all distances instead of two or three like bifocal and trifocal lenses.
  • You don't have an abrupt change in clarity when shifting focus from reading to distance or vice versa. With progressive lenses the change is gradual which makes it easier on your eyes.
  • There are no visible lines in progressive lenses. So you can look like you only need single vision as opposed to that ugly line in bifocals which may give you a look like you are aging. they give you a more youthful appearance than bifocals or trifocals.
  • Digital progressive lenses are very comfortable to wear. They offer more 40% more coverage and even clearer visibility over traditional progressive lenses.

How much do digital progressive lenses cost vs bifocals?

  • Typically bifocals are cheaper than progressives.
  • If you shop locally Bifocals will cost you anywhere from $50-$220 for just the lens.
  • Online, bifocals will be cheaper and will cost anywhere from $20-$260. There is also a large variation in price difference with regards to the type of lenses you choose. It will all depend on what upgrades your lenses have. Is it a thin index lens (thinner lenses cost more, important cosmetically for stronger prescriptions)? Does lens have anti-glare protection? Does it have blue-light protection from your computer and digital device?
  • Progressives locally can cost $80-$350
  • Online, progressives cost $49-$200 for the lenses.
